I love hunting but a horrible incident a few years back almost turned me away from this activity completely. I signed up with Montreal based outfitters who ended up cheating me off the money I had paid. They did not own a licence to the hunting grounds we were on. They gave us zero instructions on how to go about hunting and they disappeared into thin air a few days after the excursion and hunting trip began. Of course they took all our money with them.
These dishonest individuals placed us in serious danger and put us in infringement of the law. Had one of my colleagues not been familiar with the area, we could have mistakenly hunted on a property that we had no right to be on in the first place. After we reported the outfitters to the police, we were not surprise to learn that they were a group of professional conmen who have been doing this for a while now.
Unfortunately people who sign up with less than honest outfitters find themselves facing constant perils once they reach their destination. In some cases the outfitter will have falsely claimed that they have a licence to hunt on a specific piece of land. If you are caught hunting on a ground without a legitimate licence, this can lead to serious criminal charges and a possible prison sentence. In other cases the outfitter may be greedy and may have overbooked the hunting ground making it both dangerous if not impossible to carry through a good hunt. Another possible scenario is when the outfitter simply does not show up to the appointed location and leaves you stranded with several hundred dollars of your hard earned money disappearing into thin air.
