Protein shakes have become quite fashionable over the past few years and there is a lot of confusing information out there about them. Every day I seem to notice another protein themed store has sprung up on another corner of the city.
At first I found the idea of powder supplement drinks strange and unappetizing. I started to wonder if I really needed to take them. I went to my local nutritionist for a consultation and asked her opinion on the matter. The nutritionist explained to me that it is essential to get protein into the bloodstream soon after working out so the muscles can repair themselves and added that also protein shakes are great for certain people and unnecessary for others.
When you train you tear the muscle fibres and protein helps the muscle to repair and grow back. This promotes lean tissue development -the more lean tissue you have on your body the harder your body works to keep it there.
My nutritionist advised that it is better to get protein from natural sources such as meat, eggs, tofu and fish rather than large plastic containers. The advantage of taking protein in real form is that there are no added sugars or flavours or colours. However, if you have a busy lifestyle and skip meals, shakes can be handy to ensure that you get your nutrients in properly.
